Baku-APA. The terror crime rate in Russia grew by about one third in the first five months of this year, the Russian Investigations Committee said Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Alexander Bastrykin, the committee leader, told a meeting of the Committee Bureau that more than 300 terror crimes were registered during the five months. That, Bastrykin said, was a 35-percent increase over the same period last year.

He noted that the extremist crime rate increased by 16 percent.

"These (extremist) crimes present the most serious danger to our citizens, the society and the country. It is a primary goal of investigators and operative services to make our people feel secure," he was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

The situation in the North Caucasus remains complicated, as most terror crimes were still committed in the region, Bastrykin said.

Violence is common in the North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia with militants frequently mounting attacks targeting police officers and authorities.
