An Israeli Defense Force patrol had crossed the UN-demarcated Blue Line border overnight and the blast subsequently occurred, according to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which later opened an investigation into the incident.
"A UNIFIL investigation team is currently at the location indicated by the Lebanese Armed Forces. It is trying to ascertain if any traces of a possible explosion or other activity can be identified on the ground," said Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The UN force also asked the Israeli army to provide details of any incident in the area as alleged, Nesirky added.
The Israeli's army did not mention on which side of the Blue Line the explosion occurred, which killed the four soldiers. The area is reportedly heavily mined.
