Six far-flung nations are on the list of possibilities to host new Japanese embassies beginning in fiscal year 2014, including Bhutan, Namibia, Turkmenistan, the Marshal Islands, Barbados and Armenia.

The expansions would give Tokyo a greater presence in Africa and in nations linked to energy and other natural resources.

The foreign ministry has until the end of the month to formally request funding for the new missions. Japan already has 134 overseas missions compared to 164 for China.
