The clashes occurred on Tuesday as the Tel Aviv regime released about two dozen Palestinian prisoners it held for over two decades.

Israel is holding more than 4,700 Palestinians in prisons, many of them without charge or trial.

On Tuesday, Israel released only 26 Palestinian prisoners as the first batch of some 104 long-term detainees who are set to be freed in several stages.

Eleven of the 26 prisoners arrived in the occupied West Bank and were welcomed by acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas. Fifteen other prisoners arrived at the besieged Gaza Strip through the Erez crossing.

People in the West Bank and Gaza were in a festive mood and gave the released prisoners a hero’s welcome.

Israel and the Palestinian Authority are set to launch the US-mediated talks in al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Wednesday, following a preparatory round, which was held last month in Washington.

Earlier in the day, American political commentator Gordon Duff told Press TV that the latest round of the Middle East peace talks aims to buy time for Tel Aviv, and called on the Palestinian Authority to withdraw from the negotiations.

“They [Israelis] were buying time, spending money, buying off members of the Congress. They now have over 500 members of America’s Congress who have signed a letter totally supporting Israel, opposing the talks,” Gordon Duff said.

He added that the Zionist regime is buying time in preparation for a possible military offensive against Lebanon.

“Israel only wanted to buy time, and in another sense Israel is hoping to create enough publicity here where we are likely to see a renewal of violence... and we are expecting a military attack against Lebanon fairly soon,” Duff added.

He called on the Palestinians to make a wise decision and pull out from the negotiations, saying, “The Palestinian Authority has nothing to gain in entering negotiations now.”
