Baku-APA. The airport in the southern port city of Eilat was reopened Thursday after a several-hour shutdown brought on by security warnings, the Israeli Army confirmed, APA reports quoting Reuters.
An army spokeswoman said General Chief of Staff Benny Gantz had made the initial closure decision after security briefings. No details about the reason for the closure were given.
Some flights to Eilat were rerouted to Ovda Airport in the Negev Desert, media reports said.
Eilat, a resort on the Red Sea, has been the target of rocket fire from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. According to Israeli media, the airport was shut down after the recent deployment of the Egyptian Army in the Sinai.
Egypt has said 60 militants have been killed on the peninsula in the past month. Clashes have broken out there since the army's ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi July 3.
Because of the volatile situation in the Sinai, Israel has deployed an anti-missile defence battery near Eilat.
