The 76-year-old leader was admitted to hospital last September for cancer treatment. The paper wrote that Khamenei’s prostate cancer has reached stage four and has started to spread to the rest of his body, according to Western intelligence sources. Iranian state media have regularly published pictures of the all-powerful supreme leader on his hospital bed and under surgery.

Ali Hosseini Khamenei was born July 17, 1939 in Mashhad in the family of a clergyman. He is Azerbaijani by origin, from the clan of sayyids (a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad). Ali Khamenei is the second post-revolution Supreme Leader after Ruhollah Khomeini. He was president for two successive terms from 1981-1989. Khamenei was elected Supreme leader in 1989 by the country’s powerful Council of Experts after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
