An Indian army spokesman said the Pakistani troops had violated the disputed border, to which Indian soldiers responded with machine-gun fire.

“Pakistani soldiers used small arms, machine guns and mortars. We gave a calibrated response,” media outlets quoted the Indian army officer as saying on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani military official accused Indian troops of firing late Monday at Pakistani military posts in the disputed region.

Islamabad says at least one civilian has been killed and two of its soldiers were seriously injured when Indian troops opened fire across the border.

New Delhi has also accused Pakistan's army of being involved in an overnight ambush that killed five Indian soldiers on August 6.

The recent tensions have also cast doubt on the possible resumption of bilateral peace talks which have been frozen since January.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and is claimed in full by both parties. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947-- two of them over Kashmir.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past two decades.
