Baku-APA. At least 25 people were killed and 35 others injured Monday after a passenger bus skidded off road and fell into 200-feet gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The accident took place at village Latti in Udhampur district, about 302 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.
"The death toll in today's tragic bus accident has gone up to 25," a police officer posted at police control room Jammu told Xinhua. "On spot 24 bodies were pulled out, while as one succumbed to injuries while being airlifted to Jammu for treatment."
According to the official, the deceased include 11 men and 14 women.
Officials said 35 injured in the accident have been admitted in different hospitals.
"Six critically injured have been airlifted to government medical college Jammu hospital and remaining 29 are undergoing treatment here at district hospital," Yasha Mudgal, Deputy Commissioner Udhumpur told Xinhua over telephone. "We immediately pressed in our rescue teams to carry out the rescue work."
Officials said the 42-seater bus with over 60 people on board was on its way to main town Udhampur from Duddu.
Following the accident, locals and police rushed to the spot to carry the injured to hospitals and pull out bodies from the mangled vehicle.
Police officials said cause of deadly accident was being ascertained.
However, preliminary investigations carried out by police suggest the vehicle was overcrowded and the driver lost control over it while negotiating a curve on mountainous road.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian-controlled Kashmir Chief Minister have expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in this accident.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
