Baku-APA. A Briton was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Wednesday night in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, a security official told Xinhua, the third Westerner kidnapped in the country in less than a month, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The British teacher, Micheal John, who taught English in Sanaa was abducted on Hadda street in downtown the capital, the official said anonymously.

His wife who lived with him in Sanaa told police that she had lost contact with him for hours, the official said, adding that police have started to search for the man in the city.

The British embassy in Sanaa has not commented on the incident.

A British oil worker was kidnapped on Feb. 3 and another German on Jan. 31. The tribesmen who kidnapped the German national said they had seized him to exercise pressure on the Yemeni authorities to release their two jailed relatives.

Security situation in the Arab country worsened after a political upheaval broke out in 2011 that severely weakened the government control. Foreigners are then frequently kidnapped by al- Qaida militants or tribesmen who ask for ransoms or the release of their jailed fellows.

Most of the kidnapped have been freed unharmed. Last month, a South African woman was freed from the southern province of Abyan, but a ransom of millions of dollars was demanded for the release of her husband, who was abducted last May, according to local media.

The Yemeni government has taken efforts to stabilize the unrest- hit country by holding a national reconciliation dialogue which ended in January after a 10-month debate.
