12 killed in Iraq's violence

Baku-APA. Twelve people, including nine gunmen, were killed and 14 others wounded in violent attacks across Iraq on Saturday, police said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

An army outpost was attacked by gunmen in the early morning on the northern edge of the city of Fallujah, in Anbar province, some 50 km west of Baghdad, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Helicopter gunships intervened in the battle and pounded the gunmen positions, killing nine of them, the source said.

In Salahudin province, a civilian was killed and ten were wounded when two roadside bombs went off in a quick succession in the city of Tuz-Khurmato, some 175 km north of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua anonymously.

Meanwhile, a policeman was shot dead at home by gunmen in the early morning, the source said.

In addition, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol in Tarmiyah area, some 40 km north of Baghdad, damaging a police vehicle and leaving a policeman killed and four wounded, a local police source said.

Iraq is witnessing its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
