The United States and China have agreed to launch a dialogue regarding developments in artificial intelligence (AI), including for security purposes, confirmed by US Trade Representative Jamison Greer, APA reports.
"I like to think of it almost as a hotline. It's reminiscent of the red telephone during the Cold War, used in case of incidents or questions, so we could have a quick conversation. But it's not just that. It's about a broader opportunity to engage with the Chinese on this new technology that will change our economy, our world. And the two major powers need to be able to have that conversation," Greer said.
According to him, it remains to be determined what exactly the US is willing to disclose in such a dialogue, as it also concerns national security issues. However, Greer believes there must also be an understanding that there is a hotline in the event of a potential AI crisis.
The American official also acknowledged that Beijing and Washington have yet to agree on the specifics of launching a new dialogue. "Well, we've agreed to dialogue," Greer said live on Fox News. However, he noted, "actual working procedures" and agreed upon goals and objectives must now be established.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also announced the two sides' intention to begin a dialogue on AI. He and Greer participated in a new round of Sino-US trade talks on Sunday. These meetings took place in New York. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
