A man opened fire in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday morning, killing one and injuring at least three others, the police said. Reports suggest that the attacker was killed by police during arrest, APA reports citing JP.
"A terrorist armed with a Carlo-type weapon (a submachine gun) carried out a shooting in the Old City", police said in a statement, noting that the perpetrator has already been "neutralised".
The terrorist was known to police and affiliated with Hamas, according to Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev.
Arutz Sheva later reported that the attacker had been identified as Fadi Abu Shahidam, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp.
"The police response was quick, this is a serious incident - carried out by a source familiar to us. We will continue to investigate the circumstances and the immediate circles of the perpetrator until we find the verdict", Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said.
In the meantime, Israeli Channel 12 has reported that the attack was premeditated and that all involved were Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem.
Several videos, purportedly taken at the site of the incident, have since been uploaded on Twitter.
