Kazakhstan needs three nuclear power plants (NPPs) to create a nuclear cluster in the country, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, Almassadam Satkaliyev said, APA reports.
In this regard, the ministry will prepare a comprehensive plan on this issue by the second quarter of 2025.
"At least three NPPs are necessary to create a nuclear cluster. We will approach this from this perspective, especially while preparing the strategic plan of the Ministry of Energy. The areas will be determined based on the general plan for the placement of NPPs," he said at a briefing.
According to the research conducted by the Ministry of Energy, the Almaty region near Lake Balkhash has been identified as the most suitable location for the NPP.
The Kazakh government is considering several potential nuclear technology suppliers, including China’s CNNC, South Korea's KHNP, Russia's Rosatom, and France's EDF.
The government is also exploring the possibility of creating an international consortium for the implementation of the project.
