Baku-APA. The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will hold an urgent debate on Syria on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua
Addressing the 19th session of the UNHRC, its president Laura Dupuy Lasserre said she hoped the international community would unanimously condemn the ongoing violence and other human rights violations in this country.
"We hope there will be a positive response from the Syrian authorities so that we can help all those affected," Lasserre said.
After initial hesitation, Russia agreed to hold the special meeting but stressed the discussion would not result in a written document as that would not be useful in resolving the situation in Syria.
Cuba said that it hoped that the special meeting would not be used as a pretext to promote military action in the country against the territorial sovereignty of the Syrian nation.
UN General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser said the assembly has expressed concern about the ongoing violence in Syria and the need to end the killings and human rights violations. This concern was shared by several other dignitaries such as UN Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, Swiss Foreign Affairs head Didier Burkhalter and British Minister of State Jeremy Browne
