“Friends of Syria†recognize Syrian National Council as legitimate authority

Also, participants called on the Arab League to send observers back to Syria.
The conference also called for the country’s independent election under the observance of representatives of Arab countries.
Tunisia hosted on Friday a meeting of "Friends of Syria" - conference dedicated to discussing solutions to the Syrian crisis.
Russia and China which previously vetoed the UN Security Council resolution on Syria, didn’t participate in the conference because the composition of delegates, the agenda and that the focus of the initiative were not clear.
Anti-government protests which began in mid-March have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilians and the security forces. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 5400 people. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes saying they receive assistance from neighbouring countries.
In order to normalize the situation in the country and meet the demands of the opponents of the regime the Syrian government will hold on February 26 referendum on a new constitution.
At the upcoming referendum in Syria Article 8 of the Constitution, which was adopted by Parliament January 31, 1973will be amended. Along with this article, amendments and supplements to other articles of the Constitution are also planned.
