Baku-APA. The United States Thursday briefed some United Nations member states on US intelligence about Syria to gain international support for a possible military strike, said Samantha Power, US ambassador to the UN, APA reports quoting DPA.
"Today's briefing presented our assessments regarding the events of August 21 in the suburbs of Damascus, which overwhelmingly point to one stark conclusion: the Assad-regime perpetrated a large-scale and indiscriminate attack against its own people using chemical weapons," Power told reporters.
Power expressed frustration over the current stalemate at the UN Security Council, saying that because of Russia's reluctance to act, the council has failed to live up to its mandate to protect global peace.
"The system has protected the prerogatives of Russia, the patron of a regime that had brazenly staged the world's largest chemical weapons attack in a quarter century," Power said.
