A group of Democratic US senators has called for an investigation into an artificial intelligence system that falsely reported a Chinese vessel was carrying components for a nuclear weapons program in the Middle East, CNN reported.
According to reports, the erroneous AI-generated intelligence assessment nearly prompted the United States to launch military action against the Chinese vessel.
Senators Mark Warner, Jack Reed and Chris Coons cited the incident as an example of growing concerns that government agencies are prioritizing the rapid deployment and experimentation of AI capabilities over effective oversight.
They urged the relevant inspectors general to immediately investigate the incident and ensure greater transparency in publicly reporting the findings.
The senators warned that such errors could undermine public confidence in US intelligence assessments and military operations.
