US President Donald Trump has stated that he offered a diplomatic solution regarding Iran's nuclear program, but Tehran did not accept it, APA reports.
Donald Trump made the remarks during his address at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
He stated that he had been determined from the very first day of his political career not to allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
"I was determined never to allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. After I was elected president, I began negotiations with Iran and offered them full economic cooperation in exchange for halting their nuclear program. However, they did not accept it. This was a big mistake," Donald Trump noted.
According to Trump, the US subsequently carried out strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities as part of Operation Midnight Hammer.
The US President emphasized that he had tried to reach a new agreement with Iran even after the operation: "Then I offered a deal again. They refused again."
Trump also noted that Iran's arsenal of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles posed a threat to US forces.
"The regime was building up a large arsenal of missiles and drones, posing a threat to US forces in the region. They were developing missiles capable of reaching Europe," the US President added.
