Haiti will hold the first round of presidential and legislative elections on Dec. 13, the Caribbean country's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) said Monday.

In a press release posted on X, the CEP said that the second round of presidential and legislative elections, along with local and regional council elections, is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2027.

The council said the voting schedule would depend on an "acceptable security environment" and the availability of the financial resources needed to carry out the electoral process.

Haiti has not held full national elections since 2016, when Jovenel Moise was elected president. The country has not had an elected president since Moise was assassinated in July 2021.

Since then, Haiti has been mired in a political and social crisis, with gangs controlling about 90 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to international organizations.
