Around 800 million people worldwide still live in extreme poverty, APA reports.

This was stated in a message by UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed to participants of the Global Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development held in Beijing.

“800 million people – women, children and men – from remote rural communities to densely populated urban slums, still live in conditions of extreme poverty,” the message said.

Guterres noted that conflicts, climate change, deepening inequality, and heavy debt burdens are making the situation even more difficult for these people.

The UN Secretary-General called on governments to invest in the creation of decent jobs, quality education and healthcare, sustainable rural development, and universal social protection systems.

In addition, Guterres stressed the importance of reforms in the global financial system. He noted that developing countries need financing and fiscal capacity to invest in development projects, as well as broader support and representation in the international arena.
