Baku-APA. More than 2,000 Egyptians are marching through downtown Cairo to protest the military’s detention of a prominent activist, APA reports quoting Associated Press.

The protesters are chanting for the end of military rule in Egypt as they converge on central Tahrir Square. The protest Monday evening comes a day after the military ordered the activist, Alaa Abdel-Fattah, held for 15 days for questioning on suspicion of inciting violence at a protest by Christians earlier this month.

Soldiers cracked down heavily on the Oct. 9 protest, leaving 27 people dead, most of them Christians. The ruling generals have said outsiders incited the protesters into violence, prompting the crackdown, but activists accuse the military of trying to cover up their fault in the bloodshed.
