The vice-president noted that Iran regularly checks the level of pollution in the river and consistently implements programs for the prevention of pollution.

“Iran has already informed Armenia of its position regarding this issue, urging this country to reduce the untreated sewage discharged into the river and urgently take steps to prevent the water pollution,” Ebtekar said, adding that this issue is also reflected in the bilateral agreement signed between Iran and Armenia.

Iran’s top official stressed that Armenia should fulfill its obligations on the prevention of pollution of the Araz River.

Due to the discharge of sewage and industrial waste into the part of the Araz River flowing through Armenia, the ecological situation in the river has deteriorated. Iran and Armenia signed a document to prevent the pollution of the Araz River. According to the document, Armenia must fulfill its obligations by 2017 and carry out pollution prevention projects.
