Director of the Thalassemia Center Rauf Rzayev said in the event held in this regard that in May for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan’s medicine, three patients were transplanted bone marrow taken from the donors who are relatives.
“The operation was performed by local specialists at the Thalassemia Center. However, the operation was also attended by doctors from Belarus. “The patients’ conditions are stable”, he informed.
Rzayev said that the Ministry of Health and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation have played an important role in the results obtained. “Such operations are only conducted at the state’s expense and our doctors are constantly participating in the courses and seminars abroad”, he said.
Head of Bone Marrow Transplantation Department of the Thalassemia Center Nargiz Aliyeva said that 24 patients have appealed to them for bone marrow transplantation. “10 of them were selected for the operation. 4 people will be operated in October”, she added.
