Baku. Konul Kamilqizi – APA. 1,380 boxes of unusable drug without an analysis protocol were seized during the inspections carried out by the Ministry of Health this year.
Chief of the Health Ministry’s Center for Analytic Examination of Medicines Parviz Azizbayov told APA that 903 boxes of drug of those confiscated lack state registration and medication guide sheet in Azerbaijani. These drugs even lack state registration and have been brought to the country without the Health Ministry’s permission: “Perhaps their composition is quality. But according to the legislation, imported drugs must undergo state registration”.
Azizbayov said the Ministry of National Security and the Health Ministry are working together to combat counterfeit medicines, adding that a number of counterfeit drugs were seized as a result of the raids carried out on this issue earlier this year: “Society was thoroughly informed about it. Measures are underway to determine other persons suspected of preparing counterfeit drugs and their sale. No counterfeit drugs have been found out to date”.
The ministry official said the number of registered drugs in Azerbaijan is currently 4,534. Azizbayov noted that about 1% of them is domestic production, saying the country is dependent on import in medicine.
“Only 1% drugs are local production. The rest are those exported from abroad. 55% of imported drugs come from European countries,” he added.
