"When I first visited Azerbaijan in 1995-1997, there were hundreds of thousands of internal refugees due to the Karabakh conflict. They lived in very difficult conditions, settled in carriages and dormitories, " Representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan Guido Ambroso said at the international event "15 Years of Partnership for Inclusive, Progressive and Improved Migration Management".
According to him, a major operation was finally carried out and the territories were liberated from occupation:
"However, due to the demining works, the refugees are still unable to return to those areas. Currently, thousands of people are refugees because of the situation in Syria and Ukraine. Refugees face big problems in the countries they move to. They do not have many rights. But when I visited here the second time I saw that Azerbaijan had made great strides in ensuring international refugee rights," he said.
