"Although taking hostages is prohibited under international law, here people were not only taken hostage but also tortured and killed. After being murdered, they were buried in mass graves,” Eldar Samadov, Deputy Head of the Working Group of the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons, told journalists, APA’s Karabakh bureau reports.
According to him, Azerbaijan has for a long time submitted inquiries to Armenia through international organizations regarding the fate of citizens who went missing during both the Khojaly genocide and Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan.
Eldar Samadov also noted that visible signs of violence were found on the newly uncovered remains: “Injuries from blunt objects were discovered on leg, arm, and skull bones. Traces of torture are clearly visible. The clothing suggests that the remains belonged to civilians, and experts believe that women made up a large portion of the victims.”
He added that excavation is still underway, and more remains may be found in the deeper layers of the site.
