A panel discussion titled “Mine Action as a Key Enabler for Urban Recovery” was held as part of the 4th International Mine Action Conference in Baku, APA reports.
During the discussions, it was stated that humanitarian mine action is one of the key prerequisites for the safe recovery and reconstruction of cities.
Panel participants discussed the integration of the mine threat into urban planning and post-conflict development processes, the challenges posed by mine contamination to urban recovery, and the transformation of cleared areas into sustainable economic opportunities.
The importance of effective coordination between organizations engaged in humanitarian mine action, urban planning institutions, and construction authorities was also emphasized.
It was noted that the contamination of territories with mines and other explosive ordnance delays the implementation of reconstruction projects and increases investment risks. In this regard, eliminating the mine threat is one of the key prerequisites for safe resettlement and the implementation of infrastructure projects.
At the conclusion of the panel, it was stated that building safe cities begins with safe land. Humanitarian mine action is not only a security measure but also forms the foundation for sustainable development, economic recovery and the safe resettlement of people.
During the discussions, it was also highlighted that coordination between humanitarian mine action organizations, urban planning institutions and construction authorities plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of the recovery process.
