The number of underage marriages in Azerbaijan is decreasing, this was reflected in the “2024 Report of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” which was discussed today at a meeting of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs, APA reports.
Each year, the number of early marriages is determined by the number of children born to mothers under the age of 18. In 2024, the number of children born to underage mothers was 1,279. Compared to 2023, this figure decreased by 463, from 1,742 to 1,279.
It was noted that data from 14 economic regions of the country in 2024 regarding the reduction of the legal marriage age by one year were reviewed. After determining valid reasons, executive bodies granted permission to 185 underage individuals to marry, compared to 249 in 2023.
Statistical figures show a decrease of 64 permissions granted for marriage with a reduced legal age.
