Those forcing women to marry to face up to 8 years imprisonment in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani Parliament told APA that the amendments to 176-1 article of the Criminal Code are expected to be discussed.

According to the amendments, person or persons forcing women, who have reached the age of marriage, to marry may face AZN 5000-7000 fine or up to 6-year imprisonment. In the same case for women, who have not reached the age of marriage, those persons may face AZN 7000-10 000 fine or up to 8-year imprisonment. The draft is expected to be discussed in Azerbaijani Parliament this year.

The Azerbaijani Parliament has made amendments to the relevant article of the Criminal Code to prevent forcing the women to marry early during the spring session in 2011. According to the amendment, persons forcing women, who have reached the age of marriage, to marry are facing AZN 2000-3000 fine or up to 2-year imprisonment. In the same case for women, who have not reached the age of marriage, persons are facing AZN 3000-4000 fine or up to 4 years imprisonment.
