She said in some cases, parents sell their children into slavery: “We are responsible to prevent it and inform the world community.”

Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General Nafis Sadik underlined poverty and unemployment among the factors leading to the spread of human trafficking: “In order to fight successfully against human trafficking, we should eliminate the factors causing this social disaster: “Unfortunately, people don’t pay as much attention to the fight against human trafficking as to drug trafficking.”

Sadik stated that human trafficking described as a modern form of slavery is a crime and violation of human rights: “This is one of the most difficult and complex problems and generates $ 30 billion a year. Human trafficking seriously impedes people to live in freedom, peace and security. More effective mechanisms should be developed to fight human trafficking.”
