The State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs told APA that sex ratio at birth is commonly assumed to be 105 boys for 100 girls, but in Azerbaijan, but sex ratio at birth is 112 boys for 100 girls in Azerbaijan. This causes demographic problem.
Despite the Health Ministry’s report that no woman died as a result of abortions in Azerbaijan in the last two years, according to the studies of the World Health Organization, every year more than 70,000 women die as a result of abortions. Abortions are procured for various reasons. Some women do not plan to give birth to more than one child due to the lack of housing conditions and unemployment.
This list can also include sex-selective abortion. Now selective abortion is the most serious problem in the world. Azerbaijan has also faced this problem. Overall average of people on sexes at the ages of 0-17: in 1996 - 39.5% boys, 36.1% girls, in 2001 - 37.6% boys, 36.4% girls, in 2006 – 33.1% boys, 30.6% girls, in 2011 – 29.8% boys, 26.0% girls and in the first half of 2012 – 29.4% boys, 25.6% girls.
