Ministry of Emergency Situations publicizes new statistics on elimination of quake consequences last year

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov- APA. A year has passed since the quake hit the north-western regions of Azerbaijan. APA reports that houses, social and infrastructure facilities in Zagatala, Gakh and Balakan were seriously damaged as a result of the quake with an epicenter in Zagatala region.


The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) established operational staff for the elimination of the consequences of the quake shortly after it happened, and specialists of the Ministry began to take appropriate measures to assess the damage.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations sent a lot of technology, equipment, tents, food, and other assistance, as well as large quantities of construction materials to the quake-hit areas.

According to the order of the Cabinet of Ministers issued on May 8, 2012 under the instructions of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, AZN 20 million was allocated from the Reserve Fund to eliminate the consequences of the quake. In connection with the amendments in the 2012 state budget, AZN 300 million was allocated to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters, AZN 100 million was allocated under the order of the Cabinet of Ministers issued on October, 2012.

Various measures were taken to eliminate the consequences of the quake in the past year.

According to the statistics publicized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as of May 1, 2013, 55886 houses and social facilities were reviewed, 6042 houses and social facilities were considered unfit for use, decisions were made on reconstruction of 10 827 houses and social facilities, repair of 21937 houses and social facilities, 16654 houses and social facilities were considered to be satisfactory.

The construction of 3341 private houses had been completed in three regions in the quake-hit north-west region of Azerbaijan by May 1. 2843 of these houses are in Zagatala, 299 in Gakh, 199 in Balaken. 1751 houses are under construction.

The construction of 36 schools, including 20 in Zagatala, 11 in Gakh, 3 in Sheki, 2 in Balaken has started in the region. As of May 1, 2013, 6720-pupil 26 school buildings, 55-children kindergarten were opened.

As of May 1, AZN 17,734,000 was paid to quake-affected people for reconstruction works. These funds were sent via post to 5077 families in Zagatala, Gakh and Balaken regions.
