Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. Construction works in Guba mass burial site, which witnessed the genocide of Armenians against Azerbaijanis in 1918, will be started from May 15, Senior Research Fellow of the Archeology and Ethnography Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, controller-researcher of construction works carried out in the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex Gahraman Agayev told APA.

To him, the cemetery will be closed to visitors for a while: “Firstly, the Archeology and Ethnography Institute will conduct the process of cleaning the bones in the cemetery. Thereupon, the Institute of Physics will put the bones under airtight glass. Then ozone gas will be used to kill the bacteria. Up to 7,000 bones, treated with mordant by the Forensic Medicine, Pathological and Anatomical Unit of the Ministry of Health, will be put to their places.

Agayev said that 20 sq km area of the cemetery will still be maintained for international expeditions.

Guba cemetery was detected on April 1, 2007. The first well filled with the bones was detected in July and the second one in September, 2007. However, the second well in the cemetery was destroyed in November, due to failure to take necessary measures. In 2009, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev issued an order and allocated AZN 1 million for construction of “Genocide memorial complex” in Guba.

The construction works in the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation started in November-December, 2010. Final works are underway in the Complex.
