UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay said that the formation of a unified and comprehensive international normative architecture reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is about to be completed. According to the Protocol, citizens of signatory nations will be permitted to appeal to the UN’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on specific rights-related case.
The Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 2008. The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted in 1966 and entered into force in 1976.
