Compared to 2011, the number of Azerbaijani citizens applied for asylum in the European countries decreased by 12% - from 2299 to 2015, it was stated in the new report of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), APA reports.
Russia (20,522 applications, 4th place), Georgia (10,611 applications, 10th place) and Armenia (4 450 applications, 22nd) top the list among the CIS countries.
The first place is taken by Afghanistan. Nearly 36,600 Afghan citizens applied for asylum in industrialized countries. Syria ranks the second place in the list.
In general, 355,500 people applied for asylum in 38 European countries in 2012. The most attractive European countries for asylum seekers are Germany, France and Sweden. Note that, the United States continued to receive most asylum seekers in 2012 – about 83,400 applications.
