APA reports that heads of government agencies responsible for emergency management of a number of states that are members of and cooperating with the International Civil Defense Organization are attending the conference organized by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Emergency Situations at the initiative of the International Civil Defense Organization.
Delegations from 54 countries, as well as Secretary-General of the International Civil Defense Organization Nawaf al-Sleibi are attending the conference.
Interagency coordination in raising awareness regarding civil defense and emergency situations and other issues are being discussed at the conference.
Demo reel covering the activity of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations was screened as the conference started. Following this, conference participants briefed on the people’s awareness in the field of civil defense, prevention of emergency situations. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations held a presentation.
Addressing the event, Minister of Emergency Situations, Colonel General Kemaleddin Heydarov said that hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the recent natural disasters in the world and states have suffered great losses: “It is necessary to ensure the people’s safety as the risks are increasing.”
The Minister noted that 20 years have passed since the establishment of the relations between Azerbaijan and the International Civil Defense Organization and close relations were established between the sides during this period.
“Azerbaijan is located in a zone with high risk of emergency situations. Along with natural risks, there are also potentially dangerous objects,” – the Minister underlined.
The Minister said that the Ministry is cooperating with several influential international organizations and relevant agencies of foreign countries:
“Special rescue units have been established with the view of participating in the international rescue operations, they have been provided with modern equipment, aircrafts and helicopters. These units have participated in the rescue operations in a number of countries. Consultations are underway with the international organizations to improve their activity.”
Secretary-General of the International Civil Defense Organization Nawaf al-Sleibi expressed his gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and Minister of Emergency Situation Kemaleddin Heydarov for their role in organizing the conference in Azerbaijan.
Secretary-General added that more than 155 representatives are attending the conference, the conference will be a turning point in the history of the organization, will contribute to uniting the efforts of the member states.
As a part of the conference special tactical exercise will be held in Baku with participation of the forces and devices of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
