In the Khojavend district, joint international expeditions are being conducted at the Azikh and Taglar sites in accordance with memorandums signed with scientific centers from Germany, Japan, and Denmark, the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) said in response to APA's inquiry.

"The Danish archaeological group has attracted two scientific associates from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located in Novosibirsk, to its ranks," the information said.

It was noted that there is no direct agreement or project on conducting joint research with any scientific center of the Russian Federation on joint research in the territory of Karabakh and the East Zangezur economic zone, especially in the Azikh and Taglar caves.

Azerbaijani and Russian archaeologists have resumed research at the Azikh Cave in Karabakh, considered the oldest archaeological site in the former USSR, TASS reported, citing Mikhail Shunkov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and head of the Department of Paleolithic Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, APA reports.

The report states that the scientists will conduct new radiometric and geological dating of the cave, which will allow for a more accurate determination of the timeline of the first humans who left Africa over 2 million years ago and spread into the Caucasus.

The Azikh Cave, consisting of six caves, is recognized as one of Azerbaijan’s largest and oldest Paleolithic settlements and is considered one of the habitats of early humans in the Caucasus.

According to Shunkov, the renewed study of this site is of particular importance, as no archaeological excavations have been conducted in the Karabakh region for many years.

“We have resumed work in the Azikh Cave together with our Azerbaijani colleagues. During the Soviet era, this site was considered the oldest archaeological site in the USSR. Now 40 years have passed, and the site needs to be re-examined using modern methods,” he said.
