“At present, during the colder months of October–November and toward winter, there is a natural increase in the number of acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) in our country, as happens every year, and this is not alarming,” said the Ministry of Health’s specialist-expert, infectionist Tayyar Eyvazov, in response to APA's inquiry.

In individuals belonging to risk groups, the course of infections may be unfavorable

He stated that ARVI cases often cause short-term illnesses and recover without complications in a short period of time:

“Treatment is mainly symptomatic. Only in individuals belonging to risk groups may the course of infections be unfavorable. Many of these infections are seasonal, meaning their spread increases during the autumn–winter period. However, throughout the year, although less frequently, infections and illnesses caused by these viruses can still occur.”

The infectionist also provided information about this infection:

More than 200 types of acute respiratory viral infections are known

“Acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) are a compact term referring to a wide range of respiratory viral infections that are widespread and cause acute diseases of the respiratory tract. When people say ‘cold,’ they are referring to these infections. More than 200 types of them are known. These include influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and others. These viruses mostly affect the upper respiratory tract and sometimes the lower respiratory tract and lungs. Since their clinical presentation is similar, it is not always possible to distinguish them without special laboratory tests,” he emphasized.
