The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia has drafted a legislative proposal regulating the civilian circulation of acoustic weapons, tear gas canisters, and electroshock devices, APA’s local bureau reports.

The purpose of the amendments is to ensure more effective protection of public order and prevent crimes.

The MIA has already submitted the document to parliament.

According to the amendments, the import of sound (acoustic) weapons—designed only to fire blank cartridges and used in theatrical performances, film screenings, historical reenactments, parades, and sports events—into Georgia will require a permit. The transfer, transportation, and shipment of such weapons will also be possible only with police authorization. Additionally, the police will be empowered to impose restrictions on the quantity and frequency of acquiring acoustic weapons.

The import of tear gas canisters (pepper spray) into Georgia will only be allowed with a permit. Individuals aged 18 and above will be able to obtain such canisters based on a certificate issued by the territorial office of the MIA.

The civilian circulation of electroshock devices will be prohibited. Only administrative bodies and private security organizations will be permitted to import and use such devices.
