June 15 is National Salvation Day in Azerbaijan, APA reports.

In June 1993, a complex socio-political situation in the country created a real threat of civil war in Azerbaijan.

The military unit No. 709 stationed in Ganja showed disobedience and declared that it did not obey the Ministry of Defense. The government sent military units to Ganja to suppress the mutiny. However, due to ineffective policies, the scale of the mutiny expanded and reached an uncontrollable level. The rebellious military units moved toward Baku and demanded a change of power.

Realizing that the Azerbaijan Popular Front-Musavat government could not prevent these dangerous processes amid a serious risk of civil war, they turned to Heydar Aliyev for help at the last moment. Heydar Aliyev, a prominent socio-political figure and chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, accepted the urgent invitation from the people and the republican authorities and came to Baku on June 9. Taking on the mission to save the country from the threat of civil war, Heydar Aliyev risked his life, went to Ganja, and through negotiations prevented the escalation of the civil conflict.

On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan, marking the beginning of a new and ongoing successful stage in Azerbaijan’s modern history. June 15 became National Salvation Day in Azerbaijan’s history.

Since 1998, June 15 has been celebrated as a state holiday and is a non-working day.

This year, National Salvation Day, June 15, falls on a Sunday. According to the Labor Code, June 16 will be a non-working day.
