"The illegal mining activities in Armenia's Amulsar gold mine pose serious ecological dangers for the whole South Caucasus region," employee of Washington and Lee University, American environmental activist Maryam Danesh told APA.
She stressed that Armenia's mining industry is polluting drinking water reserves with chemical and radioactive substances, and poses a threat to the health of the region population.
"The Amulsar mining activity is posing a noticeable risk of radioactive and toxic contamination to the ecosystem. The illegal activities in the Amulsar gold mining industry have very bad effects on water sources, natural springs, rivers, and lakes in the South Caucasus and have very harmful effects on the people living in the region. We must protect pregnant women from toxic and radioactive substances," Maryam Danesh noted.
