Within the framework of the Great Return program large-scale humanitarian demining activities are continuing in Karabakh and East Zangazur, APA reports.
A media tour was organized to the liberated Aghdam district with the aim of informing the public and providing updates on the progress of demining efforts being carried out to combat the threat of mines.
The media tour was organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and ANAMA.
Alekbar Alekbarov, Head of a Department of the Special Risky Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that currently, 37,154 hectares of land in Aghdam district have been cleared of mines, and 31,105 mines and unexploded ordnance have been detected and neutralized.
It was noted that after the end of the Patriotic War, along with the relevant agencies, the Special Forces Unit of the Special Risky Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations has also been operating in the demining of mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive remnants of war in the liberated territories. During this activity, our personnel have completed high-level training. As a result of the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, the demining operations are being carried out efficiently with the help of modern equipment. Mechanical tools are also being used in the clearing of the areas.
Note that Azerbaijan is among the countries most heavily contaminated by landmines in the world. According to initial assessments, during the occupation, Armenia buried 1.5 million mines in our territories.
As of November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, as a result of demining operations, 200,321 hectares of land in the liberated areas have been cleared, and a total of 196,056 mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) have been detected and neutralized.
Since 1991, more than 3,400 people have been recorded as victims of landmines, Of them 362 are minors and young people, and 38 are women.
