International conference of women lawyers started today, APA reports. The organizers of the event are Euro-Asia Lawyers Association, OSCE Office in Baku, American Lawyers Association and USAID. Speaking of the role of women in society the Deputy Head of OSCE Office in Baku Robin Seaword noted that though 50% of the students studying at faculty of law are girls, only 5% of them have been provided with job. Justice Ministry Human Rights and Social Relations Department Chief Faig Gurbanov said that the active participation of women in social life is provided in Azerbaijan, like in other countries.
“There is development in this sphere in Azerbaijan,� he said.
Gurbanov said that the adoption of the gender equality law will be contribution to this sphere in the future. The representative of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Issues Vefa Alekberova said that there are 43 women judges in Azerbaijan, 23 of them work in Baku. She noted that the number of girls studying at the faculty of law has increased recently and this will cause the increase of women lawyers.
The representative of US ABA/CELLI organization Wendy Patten said that the women lawyers all over the world united and began the fight against violation. She noted that 30% of the women died in the US are killed with violation.
“The government can not struggle against violation alone. NGO should help the government. Wendy Patten said that most women appeal to women lawyers and ABA CEELI can help Azerbaijan in the realization of concrete projects concerning this problem,� Wendy Patten said.
