Currently, 43.5 million people worldwide have quit traditional cigarettes and switched to alternative tobacco products, Tomoko Iida, Director of Scientific Engagement at Philip Morris International (PMI), said at the “Technovation – Science and Innovation for Sustainable Economic Transformation” event held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
According to her, the company’s strategy of transitioning from traditional cigarettes to alternative products is already delivering tangible results, and the process has become irreversible.
T. Iida stated that alternative products are currently used in 108 countries.
She noted that PMI aims for two-thirds of the company’s net revenues to come from alternatives to traditional cigarettes by 2030. Currently, this figure stands at 43%.
According to the PMI representative, the introduction of alternative products has also contributed to a decline in smoking rates in some countries.
“In Japan, when alternative products were introduced to the market in 2015, the smoking rate was 20%. Ten years later, this figure has fallen to 10%,” T. Iida emphasized.
She added that currently around 20% of the population in Azerbaijan smokes, and there is potential for this figure to decline in the future.
