Totally 2224 HIV-infection cases have been identified in Azerbaijan since 1987, when first infection case was found in the country, until December 1, 2009, AIDS Prevention Center told APA. 2138 (96.1%) of them are citizens of Azerbaijan and 86 (3.9%) – foreigners, said Hagigat Bagirova, director of the AIDS Prevention Center, at the press conference held on December 1, the World AIDS Day. 1799 (84.1%) of registered HIV-infected Azerbaijani citizens are the men and 339 (15,9%) – the women. A number of Azerbaijani citizens passing to AIDS phase reached 448 in that period and 274 died from AIDS. 90 Azerbaijani citizens were infected outside the country.
Gadirova said Azerbaijan is among the countries with lowest rate of infection case and the disease was spread mostly among the drug users.
