Event on 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child held in Baku

Baku. Elnur Mammadli – APA. Event on the 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was held in Baku, APA reports. The event was organized by Baku Office of the UN Department of Public Information, UN Children’s Fund, Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner’s Office, State Committee for Problems of Family, Women and Children. Head of the UNDPI office in Baku Envera Selimovic said the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in the UN General Assembly on November 20, 1989. The majority of the UN member states signed the document within a short period of time. Azerbaijan joined the convention in 1992. Envera Selimovic said from the UN member states only US and Somali had not joined the convention.

Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova spoke about the measures taken to protect children’s rights in Azerbaijan and the activity of the commissioner’s office.
“But there still are a lot of children living under heavy threats,” she said.

Deputy Chairperson of the State Committee for Problems of Family, Women and Children Sedagat Gahramanova offered that children should present TV programs on November 20.
“Our main target is that everybody should realize and observe the children’s rights. But sometimes, in the poorest family children’s rights are protected, while in a better-off family children’s rights are violated,” she said.

Following this, the winners of the competition of journalists’ articles on the theme “Children’s rights for all” and competition of children’s paintings on the theme “Our rights” organized by the Human Rights Commissioner’s office under the slogan “Let’s listen to the children, ensure their participation” were awarded.
