There are about 2000 HIV-infected people in Azerbaijan

Elbrus Seyfullayev â€“ APA. 2140 have been infected with HIV in Azerbaijan. 260 of them died. 85 percent of the HIV-infected people are men, 15 percent are women. 84 percent of them are able-bodied. Head of the Working Group, MP Musa Guliyev said while the draft law on â€œPrevention of the spread of HIV infectionâ€ was being discussed at the meeting of the parliamentâ€™s committee of social policy, APA report.

Musa Guiliyev said 65 percent of HIV-infected people in Azerbaijan were infected through injecting drugs, 23.4 percent through sexual intercourse.

Guliyev mentioned that in CIS such a law was first adopted in Azerbaijan in 1996 and said there were only two HIV-infected persons in the country then. He underlined that the adoption of a new law was the demands of the time.

Chairman of the committee Hadi Rajabli said the draft law had been in the committee for two years.
