Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources announces results of monitoring in Kur and Araz rivers

National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources conducted monitoring for the first ten-day of October to study the level of pollution of the Kur and Araz Rivers and their branches, the ministry’s press service told APA. Compared with the third ten-day of September, the flow rate in the Kur River in the first ten-day of October reduced by 1 cbm/sec and made up 217 cbm/sec.

The monitoring revealed that biogenic substances exceed the maximum permissible concentration in the Kura River as a result of pollution of the water with industrial and domestic wastes in Georgia and Armenia.

Phenol pollution and copper compounds exceeds MPC by 3 times, copper compounds by 4 times in the Shikhli-2 area, phenols exceeded MPC by 3 times and copper compounds by 6 times in the Aghstafachay River, phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 2 and 5 times respectively in the Aghstafachay Reservoir.

According to the monitoring, the flow rate in the Araz River, which borders on Armenia, made up 160 cbm/sec. Phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and 4 times respectively in Horadiz area of the River, copper compounds and phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times in Shahseven I, copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and phenols by 2 times in Bahmantapa.

Oxygen concentrations in equilibrium with the air range from about 5.59 mg/liter to 6.75 mg/liter.
