Azerbaijan to host 61st session of WHO Regional Office for Europe

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. The 61st session of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe will be held in Baku on September 12-15, 2011. Health Ministry’s press service told APA that the decision was made at the 59th session of the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen on September 14-17. In line with the article 14 of the Rules and Procedures of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, according to the consensus reached by other members of the Permanent Committee, Azerbaijan, Sweden and Ukraine were elected members of the Permanent Committee for 2009-2012.

Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe made a report at the session. Following this, the participants discussed election of responsible representatives, resolutions of the World Health Assembly and Executive Committee, elections for the post of Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, membership in WHO committees. The participants also discussed strengthening of health systems, tasks of the regional office, struggle against A/H1N1 pandemic. Zsuzsanna Jakab from Hungary was elected director of the Regional Office for Europe.

A number of official meetings were held on the eve of the Copenhagen session. On the first day of the session Health Minister Ogtay Shiraliyev met with the officials of the WHO Regional Office for Europe and WHO Director General Margaret Chan. At the meeting with the Management Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), Azerbaijani delegation said the ministry has been cooperating with the GAVI since 2000. Vaccine against Hepatitis B was added to the national vaccination plan with the help of the alliance. By 2006 GAVI completely supplied the republic with the necessary vaccines, later this percentage began to fall and from 2008 Azerbaijani government began to buy the vaccines against Hepatitis B. The same year GAVI allocated $1 million to strengthen health system in Azerbaijan, improve statistics and immunization.
