Baku. Malahat Najafova – APA. Today’s most dangerous tendency is radicalism hiding under the guise of religion, said Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations.
He made the remarks at a panel discussion held in the framework of the 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum in Baku Sept. 29.
The coexistence of various religions has become a pressing issue, he noted.
According to him, justice should be provided equally for each religion during intercultural and interfaith dialogues.
“We should live together but not lose our identity. Our religion’s encouragement of showing mercy even to enemies can help us create conditions for different religions to coexist. There needs to be an individual approach. Every community has their own identity,” he said.
Metropolitan Hilarion noted that today’s most dangerous tendency is radicalism hiding under the guise of religion.
“Terrorism cannot be religious. Rather there is some terrorist activity which is hiding under the guise of religion. All terrorists are servants of the Devil and enemies of God. They reject religious values such as compassion, love, and tolerance, he said. “The massacre of thousands of people today is the gravest crime. Religious awareness is of the most pressing issues. We must protect our children from evil activities in time and bring them up in the spirit of respect for traditional religions.”
The 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum kicked off at the Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku on Sep.29.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the official opening ceremony of the forum.
The Baku International Humanitarian Forum was initiated in 2010 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and former Russian President, current Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
